Our Guide to the Austrian Audio MiCreator System

The Austrian Audio MiCreator System is a new set of creative tools, designed to help capture audio as simply and efficiently as possible, wherever you may be.

The system includes the MiCreator Studio which is a condenser microphone and USB interface combined, the MiCreator Satellite which is a remote condenser microphone designed to match the MiCreator Studio capsule and be used in combination for interviews or stereo recordings, and the MiCreator Y-Lav which is a lavalier microphone that can be connected to the MiCreator Studio.

Accessories to the system include the MCMB MiniBar that allows the MiCreator Studio and MiCreator Satellite to be mounted together on a single mic stand at a specific distances for stereo recording.

A MiCreator System Set is also available which includes the Studio, Satellite and MiniBar in one package.

Let's take a look in more detail!

MiCreator Studio

MiCreator Studio is a high-quality studio condenser microphone and, also, an audio interface with USB-C ® connectivity. Whether you are looking condenser microphone with USB-C® that you can connect to a computer (Mac or PC), tablet, mobile phone, etc. using the included USB-C® cable, allowing you to record vocals or any external audio signal directly into the software of your preferred device.

The MiCreator Studio is also an audio interface and features both a headphone socket and an additional socket for instruments. The unbalanced mono ¼” jack plug to TRSS mini jack cable is included in the box for this very purpose. Therefore, if you are a solo artist and wish to capture your guitar/keyboard etc. and vocals simultaneously, then this is easily achievable. A neat trick up its sleeve is that this instrument socket can be used as a second headphone output instead, if required. With the MiCreator Studio connected to your device, you can record and monitor simply and easily, wherever you are.

MiCreator Studio is housed in a durable metal chassis, making it incredibly robust and gives the device a satisfyingly weighty feel. There is a 3/8" thread screw hole on the bottom for mounting on a standard microphone stand and a 5/8” adaptor is also included for the larger mic stand threads. The mic capsule itself is suspended in its own shock mount and this can be angled at optimal recording positions. All of this makes the MiCreator Studio ideal for recording anywhere because it can stand up to life on the road and will be flexible enough for any recording situation.

A surprising addition in the package are a set of exchangeable red panels for the front and back of the MiCreator Studio. These can be used to replace the black ones that are already fitted to the unit. These panels are magnetically attached to the body of the MiCreator Studio so swapping them over is seamless. Austrian Audio also provide templates in various formats which allow you to create your own customised panels and send your designs off for printing. This is a fantastic way to personalise your microphone – perfect for podcasters.

Controls

The large dial/button on the front is the obvious control. This has various functions, depending on what mode you are in and these are indicated by the colour of the main LED. Press the dial to select the modes and turn the dial to adjust the parameter.

When the main LED is green – the dial acts as a level control for your headphones.

When the main LED is red – the dial controls the mix balance between your input signal and the level in your headphones coming from your connected recording device.

Input Gain for the microphone is achieved using the three position switch on the front of the unit – Hi Gain, Low Gain and Mute and this is used to match the sound source you are recording. Mute only mutes the microphone, it does not mute any incoming audio signal.

Input Gain for the instrument input is set using the two position switch on the rear of the unit – Hi Gain, Low Gain.

Connections

As already covered, the MiCreator Studio has a number of connection sockets on it.

In/Out – This is for connecting the TRSS cable to when recording external instruments or other devices such as the MiCreator Satellite microphone (see below). It can also be used as a second headphone output instead, if you require two monitoring outputs.

Out – This is the headphone output socket

MiCreator Satellite

If you require a second microphone for stereo recording or for interviews, then you can expand your setup with the optional MiCreator Satellite. This is a simplified version of the MiCreator Studio, designed to connect directly using the included TRSS cable. The MiCreator Satellite has a Link socket for linking to the MiCreator Stereo and an Output socket for headphones. This is convenient when conducting interviews, as both parties can monitor through their own headphones via their own microphones. The Input Gain of the MiCreator Satellite is controlled via the gain switch on the MiCreator Studio.

MiCreator Y-Lav

To make the system even more flexible, Austrian Audio have designed the MiCreator Y-Lav for when you need a more discrete way of interviewing/presenting. This is an analogue lavalier microphone with a 2m long cable terminating in a 3.5mm TRRS jack plug for connecting to a MiCreator Studio or other devices such as a computer, tablet, mobile phone, etc. Just like the MiCreator Satellite, it also has its own 3.5mm TRS socket which can be used to plug headphones into so that the wearer can monitor audio directly, if required.

MCMB MiniBar

This is designed to provide an easy way to achieve stereo recordings using the MiCreator Studio and MiCreator Satellite because it always guarantees a distance of 17cm between the two capsules. For the best possible result, the two microphones should be at an opening angle of 110° to each other.

MiCreator System Set

MiCreator is also available as a system set, in which you get MiCreator Studio and MiCreator Satellite including all necessary cables, exchangeable panels and the MCMB MiniBar, all combined in a practical carry case.
